Union officers Privately purchased or were often gifted their their swords. The famous Colonel Robert Gould Shaw of the 54th Massachusetts carried a sword made by Tiffany. Some Confederate officers carried swords handed done to them by their fathers who served in the Revolutionary War. This officer was extremely proud of his sword with a custom etched blade!
